The foundation’s highest priority is the support of multi-issue community organizations that work in low-income neighborhoods, that are accountable to neighborhood residents, and through which people are empowered to have a major voice in shaping decisions that affect their lives. A second priority is given to organizations that support community organizations through training, technical assistance, legal strategies, coalition building, advocacy, and policy development. The foundation’s recognition of community organizing or community action as its prime concern is promoted by its conviction that a sense of powerlessness and the apathy and alienation bred of this sense are at the root of many of the ills of our time. It believes that funding those efforts that give people hope that they can exercise a degree of control over their lives and that involve them working together toward jointly defined ends is an important contribution to the resolution of social ills.
