Community Development
Basic Needs & Housing: This program focuses on providing essential services such as food, shelter, and other necessities to individuals and families experiencing extreme hardship.
Recovery & Restoration: This initiative supports individuals recovering from interpersonal or community violence, substance use, human trafficking, and other traumatic experiences. It funds specialized, trauma-informed interventions and holistic pathways to healing.
Skill Building & Employment: This program aims to create economic mobility opportunities by focusing on personal development, fulfillment, and connection. It supports programs that provide skill-building and employment opportunities for teens and adults affected by poverty and inequity.
Miller Fellowship: Launched in 2009, this fellowship honors outstanding, experienced leaders of McGregor-funded nonprofit organizations in metropolitan Detroit. It allows agency directors to take time away from their day-to-day responsibilities to rejuvenate and undertake self-designed activities beneficial to their work.
History shows that 34% of their giving goes to Social & Human Services, almost 21% goes to Community Development and 19% goes to support Education.
Grants in recent years include:
$600,000 for Alternatives for Girls;
$150,000 for Gleaners Community Food Bank of Southeastern Michigan;
$350,000 for Avalon Healing Center;
$225,000 for Urban Neighborhood Initiatives;
$200,000 for Detroit Justice Center; and
$100,000 for United Negro College Fund.
In an effort to utilize its limited resources wisely—and because it receives more requests than it can support—the McGregor Fund adheres to the following guidelines for its grantmaking activities:
The geographic area of the Fund is limited primarily to the Detroit metropolitan area, which is defined as Wayne, Oakland, and Macomb counties. Funding is restricted to the Fund’s areas of interest, which can be found on our website: www.mcgregorfund.org.
All grant decisions are made by the Board of Trustees, which meets four times per year—generally in March, June, September, and December.
The Fund does not:
Provide loans
Make direct grants to students for scholarships
Sponsor events
The foundation’s mission is to “relieve the misfortunes and promote the well-being of humankind” by focusing on essential resources, dignity, freedom, and interdependence.
The McGregor Foundation, located in Detroit, Michigan, was established in 1925.
